Krause Center for Innovation; Print Design

During my internship at the Krause Center for Innovation (Summer 2006), I designed a brochure to advertise their Earn While You Learn program to sponsors and donors for the program. Along with this, I designed a program that was used for the sponsor and donor luncheon. I chose to include both artifacts here to show that I am capable of creating effective design in a thematic format. While other interns helped with this project, I would say that I contributed about 90% of the final theme, photography, graphic design, and layout.

Hyde Middle School Electives; Print Design

Hyde Middle School has a unique electives program that features student choice as its central feature. After several years of working with the Electives Department to strengthen the program, we finally embarked on a complete redesign of our catalog.

For this project, I wrote the introduction and quiz at the end, managed all electives teachers as they re-wrote their own course descriptions, shot and edited the photography, planned the theme, and designed the final layout. It should also be noted that the final version was printed in cobalt blue and white, which is why most of the design is in neutral tones.

Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation; Flyer

The Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation sponsors a yearly art contest in memory of artist Lucretia Van Horn for middle school students in the Cupertino Union School District. As the manager of this contest, it is my duty to create print advertisements and entry forms that are visually appealing, yet also convey important information.

This flyer is of the 2007 theme "Inside Emotion." The bright colors and interesting fonts were selected to appeal to the middle school age group. I also selected works of art that hinted at possible theme meanings in order to stimulate thought in potential entrants.

Graphic Instructional Resources; Portfolio

For my Graphic Instructional Resources class, I created a variety of print-based designs that were intended to enhance advocacy and learning in the visual arts. This is my final portfolio for the class, which includes an example of information design, a promotional flyer, and a trifold brochure.

This portfolio also shows that I am capable of taking different artifacts and displaying them together using a strong theme (the visual arts, in this instance). Each artifact has a cover page that describes the intention behind the design and the technology used to create it.

As a visual art teacher at Hyde Middle School, I wanted my students to have a resource that would give information about the program, course contents, and valuable art resources. This site has evolved a lot through the years, but this new site design is one of which I am very proud.

Based on student artwork and course content, this design really gets at the heart of our program. I selected core colors of green to represent growth, blue to show learning, and the bright yellows and orange of our school lion. And, of course, the student artwork is the center of all the learning that takes place on this site.

Interpreting Art; Website Design

When I was teaching my students how to interpret a work of art, I found that many of them needed a job aid to help them review the process outside of class. So, I created this simple website to help them through the describe, analyze, interpret, and judge model for interpreting works of art.

The model walks students through a possible interpretation of artist Marc Chagall’s painting, I and the Village. Many of my students said that it was useful in helping them prepare for our interpreting art test and our museum visit.

Grant Reporting Site; Website Design

As part of my web design coursework, I was asked to create a website for a non-profit group that needed to report the results of its grant study. All of the information was given to me, and I created this design to report the results of their scientific study.

While this is a fictional website, it was fun to play with picture-based navigation and also to use a black site that is accented with bright colors and beautiful photography. This site was designed for a larger screen resolution (but the individual pages can be resized to fit any screen resolution) to give me a different challenge in designing a home page.

Solar Newsletter; Website Design

For this assignment during web design coursework, I was asked to create a website newsletter that reported information about the solar system. All of the information was given to me, and I created this site in a newsletter format to share this content in a user-friendly way.

Again, this is a fictional website. I enjoyed playing with gradients, rounded corners, and an interesting layout to make this site.

IT Interview; Movie

Early in my Instructional Technology master’s degree program, I was looking into the professional opportunities of an Instructional Technologist. For one assignment, we were asked to form groups and conduct a report on someone currently working in the field of Instructional Technology.

My part of the project was to film an interview with Linda Ullah, Teacher in Residence at the Krause Center for Innovation, Foothill College, Los Altos, California. After getting the film footage, I edited the film down to this simple video so that others could learn from her excellent example.
